Frequently Asked Questions
Which Product Should I Use On My Labrador To Remove Grass Burns?
I Know There R Pills And Biscuits And Maybe Other Products U Give To Dogs So Their Pee Stops Burning Grass. Which Product Or Brand Is The Best?
I am a vet tech and own 3 labs. No vets I know of will recommend any of the products you describe. It would be changing your dog’s basic PH, which would not be in his or her best interest.
I know that’s not what you wanted to hear, but I do have a solution that has worked for us. First of all, we live in Georgia, where pine islands are common. So we trained all our dogs to urinate on pine straw and directed them to their potty area. Only rarely did any of them go elsewhere. It takes a little training in the beginning, but you know how smart labs are! In your area you may use mulch or some other type of substance for their potty area.
For the times when an accident happens, we mark the spot quickly and then pour water over it. A watering can will work, but we had a hose right there. Just douse the spot with water, and the grass won’t die.
A couple of times, one of us missed the spot, and it would turn brown. We would then go in and pull out the grass and encourage new growth to fill in, which it does in a couple of days.
Now, if you have outdoor dogs, it will be harder to do. Dogs do like to return to the same areas to potty, though. Hope this helps you.
How Do I Get The Black Dye From Mulch Out Of My Garden Pond?
I Recently Put In A Garden Pond (550 Gal) With Some Fish And Water Lillies And Plants And Planted Flowers Around It. I Put Dyed Black Mulch Around The Flowers And When It Rained Yesterday All Of The Dye From The Mulch Washed Into My Pond! Now My Pond Water Is Black As Can Be And I Can’T See My Fish Unless They Come Right Up To The Surface. Is There Anything I Can Put In My Water To Clear It Up Without Harming My Fish Or Having To Drain The Pond? I’M Just Worried About Draining It Because I’M Afraid When It Rains Again It Will Just Happen Again. Any Suggestions?
The dye will go away in time, but I worry about the chemicals in it. I think I would drain the pond just to be safe. And then make the pond so it is above grade or remove the mulch. Replace the mulch with pine straw or at least plain mulch.
Always build a pond about 4" above grade to keep run off from happening.
What Problems To Mites Cause?
For People? Animals? I Need To Know Any Problems They Cause And Possible Where They Are Found!
is a parasite of humans and other animals. Scabies mites are host-specific. The varieties of scabies that infest domestic animals can penetrate the skin of humans and cause the typical itching and rash, but they cannot complete their life cycles there. .
The rash and intense itching associated with scabies occurs when the nymphs burrow into the skin and begin feeding. These symptoms usually appear several weeks to a month after the initial infestation. The majority of mites are found in lesions in folds of skin between the fingers, on the sides of the feet, on the wrists and genitals, and in the bends of the knees and elbows. Personal contact, particularly holding or shaking the hands of an infested person, is a principal method by which the mites are spread.
Chigger (Red Bug)
small, reddish mites that feed only in the larval stage on humans and other animals, particularly rodents. On animals, chigger larvae remain attached to the skin for several days but on humans, they are usually dislodged within several hours of attachment. The bites commonly cause itching in about 3 to 6 hours and dermatitis develops in about 10 to 16 hours. They are commonly encountered at the woodland borders, along the periphery of swamps, and in shrub thickets and unmowed areas of lawn. Areas that contain thick layers of pine straw, leaf litter or thatch are suitable habitats for chiggers and their prey.
the chicken mite (or red mite of poultry), is similar to the fowl mite in its host preferences. Unlike NFM, the chicken mite spends much of its time off the host bird, hiding in cracks and crevices during the day and feeding at night. It can be a serious problem to workers who handle birds
House Dust Mites
common species of house dust mites in North Carolina . These tiny mites are most abundant in warm, humid areas. Contrary to popular belief, house dust mites do not bite or sting. They feed on shed human skin scales that collect in the dust on furniture, particularly mattresses, and on carpeting below beds. House dust mites are important medically because they produce allergens in their secretions and excrement. Inhaling airborne house dust containing mite feces and cast skins is a common cause of asthma in young children.
How Many Square Feet You Cover With A Bale Of Pine Straw, Make It 3&Quot; Thick?
Use A Standard Pine Straw Bale And Make The Layer 3&Quot; Thick.
I don’t know how big your bales are, but a rule of thumb is that 1 cubic yard of mulch (any kind) will cover an area 20'x20' 3 inches deep or slightly more.
I Believe The Acid From Pine Needles Will Not Let Me Grow Grass. Is Lime The Answer And How Much/Often?
Its The Middle Of The Winter But It Is Like Spring Outside. I’M Tempted To Rake The Needles And Spread Lime. I Wonder If I Should Bother.
Pines deplete the soil of nitrogen Use high nitrogen content fertilizer. Also, constant shade will choke out most grasses. If you live in the deep South, pines depleted the nitrogen 1,000 years ago. Any store salesperson (K-Mart, Wal Mart, etc) can put you onto a fertilizer with a “High first number” such as “80–20–10.) Lots of nitrogen and lots of water will give you good results.,,,,,,,,,,,,harold
