Alternatively, it may be that life is far more common than we think and we just have not yet been able to recognise it.

Looking forward, what is the purpose of life? Which of us are dinosaurs and which primates. The Universe seems deterministic. Is it physical evolution we should be looking for? Perhaps synthetic life. Or is the evolutionary pinnacle imagination and self awareness.
