Introducing the Producer Showcase / featuring Ghosthack
In this, our first installment of our Producer Showcase, we are happy to introduce you to Christoph Palme aka Ghosthack. Based outside of Cologne, Germany Christoph has been giving to the production community for years. With an ear and passion for Dubstep he’s had his music released on several labels and been creating sample packs since 2010.
Big ups to Christoph who provided Looplabs with a mega-pack full of Dubstep, NeuroStep and Drum’n’Bass with more than 650 loops and samples spanning a massive GB of sonic fury. Make sure to check them out in the Looplabs Studio!

Great to finally chat Christoph, can you let our member know how long have you been making music? and what inspired you to start?
I started electronic music production in 2006 with FL Studio 5. I was pretty much into Trip Hop and Downtempo stuff at that time as well as some atmospheric anime and movie soundtracks and wanted to create something similar.
When did you know that music was going to be a part of your life?
Music was actually always a part of my life, making music just intensified it and I built a much bigger relationship to it.
What’s been a highlight in your music career to date?
Some time ago I had a great DJ Performance in a dope club in cologne called Odonien. I played some dubstep tunes from myself as well as from other producers together with an MC.
What was the last live show/concert that you saw that left you inspired or impressed?
I don’t go often to live shows or concerts, but the last great event had been a DJ performance by Kromestar in Cologne. It had that oldschool dubstep feeling, that I miss a bit in the clubs today.
What artists/producers are you into right now or think are doing interesting things?
I listen to very different music and producers, right in the moment I think many stuff that has been released by OWSLA’s Youtube Channel sounds pretty good. My overall favorite electronic artists are Boards of Canada, Autechre and Aphex Twin.
What’s your general process when making/producing music?
I always start with creating a 4 to 8 bar loop and with some drums. Then I add the bassline, pads, leads and so on. When I’m satisfied with the whole loop I start building the song structure, starting with the intro and going chronological through the whole track.
What do you think are the 3 most important things when producing music?
First of all, having a unique sound, that stands out from the masses. Sound quality is the next point and keeping your track interesting from the beginning to the end the third one.
What are your thoughts on the future of music?
I’m curious what will be next new hot genres in electronic music. In the past we had Trap, Tropical House, then Future Bass, just wondering what will be the next big thing.
Also, the market for digital music gear is always evolving. Serum for example had a huge impact, I’m wondering if we will see something like that again in the future, a new synthesizer that nearly everybody is using.
What do you think are the best ways to promote music in today’s connected world?
Look for Youtube and Soundcloud Repost Channels that fit your sound and send them regularly your tracks. Getting featured on a big Youtube Channel will give you lots of new listeners.
What advice would you give to people starting to create and produce music?
Be patient :)
Making good high-quality music with a clean powerful sound is a long-term process, it could take years until you have a top notch mix. Learning and producing constantly is a must, your ears will be trained over a long period of time.
Can you tell us a bit about how Ghosthack started and why?
As said at the beginning of the interview, I started producing already in 2006 under the name Ghosthack. I mainly made some downtempo and trip hop stuff for the first few months, until I discovered my interest in drum and bass and later dubstep, which was my music genre of choice for a pretty long time. Around 2008 to 2010 I got several releases on some American dubstep labels like Shift Recordings, 2012 Records and Dubfront Records.
In 2010 I also released my first free dubstep sample pack and I was surprised about the very good feedback and the massive number of downloads.
From that time on I published a few more free sample packs and the feedback from the producers and the download numbers were always astonishing. Up to this point, our free sample packs have been downloaded around 600,000 times.
Due to this success, I decided to put the whole Ghosthack project on a new level and released some commercial sample and preset packs, with a higher standard of quantity and quality.
Now I have a team of different sound designers from around the world and release on a regular base new products and freebies.
What exciting plans do you have for the coming year?
Of course, we will release high quality sample and preset packs further on, free as well as commercial ones. We have also plans on releasing Kontakt Instruments and we are already planning a nice and easy solution for a producer website, I worked for many years as a web developer. Also, hopefully our Youtube Channel will grow in this and the coming year.
