Self-Awareness: How I Learned to Look Inward
Self-Awareness is a skill that takes time to build, but it’s worth the effort.
One of the best things that we can do to ourselves is become more self-aware. Why do we think the thoughts that we have? Why are we saying what we’re saying to others? Why am I feeling this way? Becoming conscious of the unconscious allows us to gather deep insight into ourselves. Self-awareness is a skill that everyone should work on.
Why work on your self-awareness?
- You will become more in tune with yourself.
- You will become more in tune with others and the world around you.
- You’ll be able to have a greater understanding of your unconscious thoughts.
- You’ll be able to dig deeper into your strengths and weaknesses.
- You’ll be able to better relate with others.
What can you do to work on your self-awareness?
There are many ways that you can work on your self-awareness, but the ones that I have found that have given me the most output are:
- Writing your thoughts
- Seeing a therapist
On meditation for self-awareness
Meditation is one the best things that you can do for your self-awareness. When you’re able to quiet your mind, focus on your breath, and remove the distractions of the world around you, you’re able to look inward and notice yourself at a much higher wavelength. Like anything, meditation takes consistent practice, but keep at it.
On Writing for self-awareness
It’s one thing to think, but it takes on a whole new light when you write down your thoughts. You’ll be able to connect the dots between what seem like unrelated thoughts. You’ll see thought patterns start to emerge, and you’ll become more self-aware of yourself. Why do your thoughts go that direction? What kind of insight can you gain from this? There’s only one way to figure this out, and it’s to let the pen go to thoughts that you may be afraid of. Let it go, and see what emerges.
Therapy for self-awareness
One of the best ways to become more aware of where your thoughts are going is to see a professional therapist. Wait a minute, aren’t those just for crazy and depressed people? Absolutely not. A professional will help you connect the dots and gain a better understanding of who you are as a person.
A word of caution for self-awareness.
It’s easy to go deep where before you were just dipping your toes in the water. It’s easy to go so deep into yourself that you forget the outside world. You become so focused on yourself, that you end up neglecting those around you. You have to find a balance when you are working on your self-awareness. That can only come through experience.
