Life IS a race, but that’s actually a good thing

You’ve probably heard somebody say at some point “life is not a race.”

But as a long distance runner, Christian, and Zoomer, I’m here to tell you differently.

Pacing is one of the most important skills you need to become a decent distance runner. You can’t go out too hard in the first leg of the race, because then you’ll likely fade during the middle. You have to hit the sweet spot of fast-but-not-too-fast (which is exactly as hard as it sounds, by the way).

This, of course, applies to life as well. If someone was pushed by parents, society, or themselves to achieve incredible things at a young age, but they’re so burnt out and/or mentally ill they’re finding it difficult to continue, then that shows that they haven’t paced themselves very well. On the flip side, someone else could get started in the ‘race’ late, but still end up outstripping everyone else by the end of their career/life.

As a young person, I try to remind myself that — hopefully — I have quite some time yet to do what I want to do. This is not an excuse for slacking off: I need to be consistent. But I can pace myself. I don’t have to have this paralyzing feeling of anxiety like I need to get everything done in the next year or two of my life, or that I need to have it all “figured out” right now.
