Creating games, apps and websites requires access to many different skill sets. These include things like programming, design, art and sound. As a software developer I can cover the programming, but when it comes to art and sound I prefer to limit it to editing assets someone else has created. Due to the time and money they save, every indie developer loves to hear about sources of free assets. Over time I have built up a list of different sources I like to use, which I will share here.

Images and Vectors

  1. Pixabay: https://pixabay.com

A huge variety of royalty-free photos, vectors and illustrations. Especially useful for websites, but can be good for games too.

2. FindIcons: http://findicons.com

All sorts of different icons of various sizes and colours.

3. OpenGameArt: https://opengameart.org

A wide selection of game art assets, including tile sets, sprites and backgrounds.

4. Free Downloads: https://www.1001freedownloads.com

Royalty-free textures, vectors and icons, similar to Pixabay.

5. Open Clipart: https://openclipart.org

Selection of clipart images.

Sound and Music

  1. FreeSound: http://freesound.org

A vast selection of sound effects, game loops and music. Sounds are available under many different licenses.

2. Incompetech: http://incompetech.com

Huge variety of high quality music tracks and game loops.

3. FlashKit: http://www.flashkit.com/soundfx

Sound effects grouped into various different categories.

4. Open Music Archive: http://openmusicarchive.org

Out-of-copyright sound recordings, which are tagged and searchable.

5. IndieGameMusic: http://www.indiegamemusic.com

Music tracks, designed to be used by indie game creators.

Wrap up

These sources have helped me find assets for many different games, apps and websites over time. I hope you find them useful too, enjoy!
