Senryu of the Seven Sins

“A Smiling Young Man Squeezing Grapes” — Gerrit van Honthorst, 1622

*

I am a marvel
such as no one has beheld
in all creation!

*

The world should be mine…
but if it were, I would want
more and more…and more.

*

I want what you have:
all things that ever were yours
Should ever be mine–

*

Your lover’s fingers
in my hair–my lover’s breath
caressing my skin…

*

I’d devour it all–
the lovers, the food, the world–
make it part of me

*

or destroy it all,
even if so doing meant
rending my own self!

*

What things I would do!
…if I could just be bothered
to get out of bed.
