Stars
A Villanelle

You thousand stars up in the sky
Millions of miles away may be —
You are as near to me as I.
Through Galileo’s glass I spy
Your glowing gaseous energy,
You thousand stars up in the sky.
You like noble lords on high
And I like beggar on bended knee —
You are as near to me as I.
My burning brain may ever try
To fathom your stellar mystery,
You thousand stars up in the sky.
Though it seems but a soothing lie
That you and I are really we,
You are as near to me as I.
We both were born, we both will die;
Stardust I was, stardust I’ll be.
You thousand stars up in the sky,
You are as near to me as I!
