I’m guessing that it’s considerably cheaper and easier to license a song and then cover it for a movie than it would be to license the original of a big song from a big band/songwriter. And it’s a lot easier to avoid the accusation of being cheap if you then don’t all but try to copy the original recording.

This is basic movie cheapness done under the pretence of being edgy/arty.
