I want to be a Creative Director
So you decided you really want to be a CD. I’m so happy you chose this path. There are so many stories and adventures. Filled with joy and pain. Stress and excitement. Nervousness. Victory. And a ton of amazing people. It’s kinda what you think it might be like, but a lot more, and nothing like what you think, all at the same time. Oh, and see those loud, abrasive, overly-confident, constantly yelling CDs that seem so sure of themselves? Those ones have no idea what they are doing. And I don’t mean they don’t know how to come up with a deliverable. They get that part. When I say they don’t know what they are doing, I mean they don’t know how they’re affecting their team. The examples they are setting for interns and others; by taking the incorrect, high-stress causing approach, only leads to burn out and good people leaving.
Younger Lo, trust your instincts. It feels wrong and unnatural to be that way, so don’t be. Spend time with your team. Get to know your team. Explain “why” to your team. Set clear expectations with your team. Always try to make them feel safe. They will be grateful and loyal. Listen to them and put that extra time into helping them grow. You’ll enjoy watching them elevate even more than they will. Show your work and share your work. Some will doubt that you are trying to help them, but be patient. They’ll soon realize you never have ill intentions. Know that there will be so many people from other disciplines and backgrounds that don’t know what you know or speak how you speak. Hold their hands and explain slowly. They’ll be some of your biggest advocates.
Remember the business. The creative is important but without the business, the creative serves no purpose. And keep doing your tutorials. It makes it so much easier to stay nimble and understand what the rest of the team is talking about. Of course, teach your team, but stay comfortable being a student. There’s nothing like teaching an old dog new tricks. You’re doing a great job. Don’t worry about the noise over there, it has nothing to do with your path. That noise was always there and it always will be. Stay focused. Stay focused on what you want. Stay focused on how you get it. Stay focused, but remember why you’re doing it. Take time to enjoy and reflect. Keep on saying please and thank you. Remember who you are and represent accordingly. A new decade is upon us. Enjoy the night, but back to it when the sun comes up.
Cheers and Happy New Decade.
