Momentum is powerful — it can take you to places in life that are unimaginable, help you reach goals that appear unattainable, cause you to accomplish the impossible. However, it can also be unsustainable. It’s easy to find yourself burning-out when the energy required to keep the momentum moving becomes too demanding.

But momentum doesn’t have to end in a crushing collision. Under the right controls and with enough fuel, momentum can be sustained.

It took me longer than I’d like to admit to realise this. I can’t recall the number of times I’ve found myself drained out, splattered across my bed, having fallen from such a great high. In fact, it was during one of these moments that I learned how to prevent them.

I was working as a waitress in a popular pub-chain at the time. This chain was extremely focused on reaching certain targets — if you made a certain amount of sales you’d receive a bonus, food vouchers as rewards for no wastage and so on. I had been on a four-month streak of reaching all of my targets until it all fell apart in the space of one night. I didn’t know what had happened to me but I was so fatigued and messed up so many times that day that it wasn’t possible for me to reach any of my targets for that month.
