And it would be even worse if we switched to the popular vote. Then all campaigning would be in dense population centers an the entire Midwest/rust belt would be completely ignored.

There are certainly good and bad either way, but the current system allows a very wide range of beliefs and lifestyles and experiences to help decide who will be the next President. If we switched to the popular vote, only large cities who are 99% far, far left on the political spectrum will decide who the President will be.
