What’s up, everyone? How’s everything? Welcome to Movie Review with Lou, where I talk about the movies and series I’ve watched. If you’re new, I posted my first movie criticism about Avatar: The Way of Water. Please go check it out later!

Today I’ll talk about the movie I just (literally) finished watching: Gifted Hands. I’m so excited to talk about it here!

Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (2009) is a biographical drama film that involves medicine and a story of overcoming. Directed and produced by Thomas Carter and written by John Pielmeier, the film is based on the autobiography of neurosurgeon Benjamin Carson, who became a politician later.

Ben Carson was considered dumb by his classmates. He wouldn’t get any questions right on the exam and didn’t have a good imagination. His single mother, Sonya, is frustrated about her son’s grades and failures and decides to do something about it, so she requires him and his older brother, Curtis, to study so they can have a bright future that she never had. She obligated the two kids to watch less television and read more books. They complained, but eventually, they got their first book, and things got more interesting. At the end of the week, the brothers should deliver a report about the books they read to their mother.

Ben read a lot of books about rocks and chemicals and started to be the best in his class, evolving throughout the years. He had a lot of faith in God during his troubled adolescence and began to get back to track again.

He entered the area of Chemistry and Medicine. He trained as a neurosurgeon and became the best pediatric neurosurgeon in the world. Got married, had kids, and continues to have his mother’s support. She was always saying he could be anything he wants because he was a clever kid.

Until he got a proposal to do the surgery on Siamese twins from Germany connected at the head since they were born. He planned an operation that included several types of doctors and surgeons. The procedure was done in twenty-two hours and both twins survived. Ben had to make a hard and risky decision to stop the babies’ hearts and blood to be successful. It was dangerous, but he was very much appreciated for his effort in the end.

IT IS A CRAZY MOVIE! I’ve seen a lot of absurd stuff involving Medicine, but I’ve never seen such a thing to stop hearts to do surgeries. It’s extremely inspiring for young people that are too much lazy to study but want to be someone in life. It has a lot of life lessons I needed to hear and an extraordinary film about second chances and never giving up.

I admire Sonya Carson’s ability to always support her sons no matter what, have faith in God, and teach them to do the right thing. She always instructed her sons to never give up on their dreams and that they can be whatever they want with their imagination and cleverness. It’s encouraging and inspiring. I WANT TO BE LIKE HER WHEN I GROW UP, PLEASE!

“You can do anything anyone else can do, only you can do it better” – Sonya Carson.
