Review: Not the best book I’ve read. Too much pontificating about current events. If I wanted that I would tune in Fox News or NPR. Fiction books should be an escape for the reader not a recap of current political events. Additionally, the criminal’s motive is discovered by a reporter who writes gossip columns and not the NYPD. Give me a break!

Review: From the first time I started reading a Linwood Barclay book I was hooked on his stories! They were unusual stories with a little comic relief. But — not with this one! I gave this book 2 stars because he is a great writer. This story is way too easy to figure out the ending and way too many everyday characters. If you want to read really good stories go to his earlier books! Don’t waste your money on this one!

Review: This book was okay for the first fifty pages. Afterwards, though, it shot itself in the foot with a miraculous string of unbelievable events, stories and plot. This was all nicely wrapped up within a cheesy script full of naff, datdd and unnecessary one-liners. Despite the hype surrounding the book, you’d be better avoiding this novel.

Review: I’ve always loved Linwood Barclay books (think, Promise Trilogy) so I was just a little bit disappointed that after waiting so long for this new release, it wasn’t the page turner that I’d expected. The fundamentals of Barclay’s earlier writings were there, interesting storyline with a few overlapping plot lines, potentially interesting characters, and the build up of suspense….it just never “took off” — although there were several moments throughout the first 2/3 of the book that moved in that direction, but then “flattened”. Perhaps this was stylistically intentional (though I can’t imagine why) since the last 50 pages or so were exactly what I had originally expected, classic Linwood Barclay — unfortunately, I couldn’t enjoy the page turning ending as much as I’d have liked, having lost some level of interest in the earlier chapters. One way to describe the writing….the earlier chapters felt “distracted” while the ending was finely focused. Barclay remains one of my favorite authors and I await his next book — but I can’t “highly” recommend this book — although if you’re a fan, you’ll enjoy it …well enough.

Review: I think I’ve read all of Linwood Barclay’s novels. I like the way he puts ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances and then helps them find a way out. However, I struggled to get through Elevator Pitch. I’m not sure why; it could be something going on with me — too busy, had to read the book in snatches — but this one did not hold my interest until the last few chapters. I finished it out of pure stubbornness and will confess to feeling some relief at being able to move on to my book club selection for the month.

The inventive plots, the unique characters, and the wry sense of humor that made Barclay’s earlier books so enticing have returned in Elevator Pitch. Get it and read it, and forget about that trilogy (which sadly had four books).

Review: This author’s work has, in the past, always been a treat to read. But he’s fallen down on the job.Take this passage:“Seventy thousand elevators, and roughly a hundred and forty inspectors,” Fleck said. “Do the math. That’s about eighteen hundred elevators per person….”I mean, it literally says “Do the math.” SMH.The book is sloppy and hasty like this throughout. For example: elsewhere in the text, the number of NYC elevator inspectors is reported to be 39. (Though 70,000 divided by 39 IS roughly eighteen hundred, so at least there’s that.)Then there’s the protagonist Barbara, who seems pretty smart and articulate, but then writes an article, in Chapter 77, that’s essentially one very long cliche (and that starts out “It’s a cliche, but…,” a preemptive apology that lets neither her nor Barclay off the hook).The author has really phoned this one in. One might even wonder whether he actually wrote it. Though maybe he’s just trolling us, in which case, well done, sir, you really had me going until I came back hours later and added this line.
