Charges of Permanent Settlement:-

1Holmes, Thornton, Seton Carr, R.C. Majumdar, Tara Chand and P. N. Historians Chopra and others have condemned Cornwallis's permanent settlement as a mistake. According to him, this settlement had the following negative consequences‌.

1). Initially it Proved Disastrous for the Landlords:-

Initially the permanent settlement had a devastating effect on the zamindars. The reason for this was that the government fixed the compensation amount too high. Due to this, many landlords could not deposit their compensation amount with the government on time. So the government sold their land. Due to this, these landlords remained only beggars.

2). Ignoring the Interests of Farmers :-

Another major charge against the Permanent Settlement was that it completely ignored the interests of the farmers. They were left at the mercy of the landlords. As a result, the zamindars started abusing the farmers at will.

3). Financial Loss to the Government :-

Due to the permanent settlement, the government suffered huge losses in future. With the passage of time the income derived from the lands increased but the government could not increase the amount of its rent. Due to this, the permanent settlement did not prove beneficial for the government.
