Where were you born and where did you grow up?

I was actually born in Manhattan, but I grew up in the Bronx, until 1969, when we moved to Yonkers. That’s where the people went. You went to Yonkers or Co-op City.

What were your earliest formative experiences with music?

I was always into music; I always went to clubs. I used to collect, back then, 45s, and I used to go to Downstairs Records, which was at 42nd Street. I just used to buy records — they would play them and I would buy them. …
