Eyes On The Horizon

How to be happy (and avoid sea sickness)

A few days ago, I went for a ferry ride around the southern coast of Sweden with my girlfriend and her family. After a few minutes of choppy waters, I started to feel sea sick. Her father leaned in and said, “Go outside, get some fresh air, and keep your eyes on the horizon.” I took his advice and within a few minutes, I felt fine.

The magic of Sweden’s coastline is not to be missed. In parts, the sky looks like it was painted by Renoir. The hum of the breeze and the roar of the waves create a symphony conducted by something seemingly supernatural. And its beauty is immeasurably amplified when experiencing it with people you love. I’m so lucky that I got to take it all in.

Apparently, keeping your eyes on the horizon is a well-known tincture for motion sickness. It’s also a powerful metaphor for life.

Sometimes, life is choppy. Your career, relationship, health, whatever, can feel like a tumultuous undercurrent that sets you off course and makes you feel sick. At times like these, it’s important to step outside, get some fresh air, and keep your eyes on the horizon. Don’t let the rocky waves beneath you prevent you from discovering the magic and beauty that’s all around.

In short, step outside of the problem, take a few deep breaths, and look ahead at the bigger picture. It’s going to be great.

Today is the beginning of 2014. A new year.

I’m going to take it all in. No matter what.

Will you?
