‘The Murder of Roger Ackroyd’ by Agatha Christie: Book Review
Hello, my name is Avni. Welcome to my book review blog. Here I will be reviewing some handpicked books and recommending them for your reading list.
This is a book review about one of Agatha Christie’s novels, ‘The Murder of Roger Ackroyd’. This book is definitely a must-read if you enjoy mystery, suspense and crime fiction. After all, Agatha Christie isn’t known as the Queen of Crime for nothing! She is one of the best crime authors up there with Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Alan Poe. She is, in fact, one of my favourite authors. ‘The Murder of Roger Ackroyd’ stars Agatha Christie’s most famous creation: our favourite Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot.
The plot is set after Poirot’s retirement when he finally goes to the little village of King’s Abbot. The book is about the titular murder of Roger Ackroyd and the blackmailing of Mrs. Ferrars and is narrated from the perspective of Doctor Sheppard.
I would like to include a short extract from the book: “‘Use your little grey cells,’ [Poirot] said. ‘There is always a reason behind my actions.’” This is one of my favourite quotes — even though it might not seem like much out of context — as I think it perfectly depicts Poirot’s character. It shows that he is always organised and doesn’t leave a single thing unaccounted for, always following his ideals of order and method.
Agatha Christie’s crime masterpiece is crafted so well that not a single unnecessary detail is present and every single detail, however seemingly irrelevant, is crucial to the grand finale. She leads us to suspect several people but then proves their innocence with a seemingly unimportant point and when the murderer is finally revealed, they are the one person that nobody actually suspected.
Agatha Christie has raised our expectations to Herculean levels (pun intended) and this masterpiece does not disappoint.
It’s an absolutely thrilling read and it will keep you on your toes. However, in my opinion, this book should be read by anyone over the age of 10. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone younger because it involves a murder and includes concepts like blackmailing that I don’t think younger minds should be introduced to. Fans of mystery and crime are sure to enjoy this book.
