If We Can Afford Our Current Welfare System, We Can Afford Basic Income

I am forever amazed at the twists of logic it takes to justify something. The article starts with an assumption which isn’t true: “if we can afford our current welfare system…”

Please explain to me how we are affording our current welfare system when our current “on the books” deficit is in the neighborhood of $18 trillion (at the time this comment is written) and the “off the books”/unfunded obligation is somewhere in the netherworld of $150–200 trillion (depending on whose figures you accept).

Clearly, we can’t afford our current welfare system!
