Australian Lollies

In Australia, lolly is a word that can mean anything from rock candy, chewing gum, chocolates, and numerous other flavourful treats that are known as candy or confectionery in other parts of the world. Each country has its special type of snack or sweet that is uniquely its own, and Australia is no exception. Aussie lollies are well-known for their luscious flavour.

Aniseed Rings

Throughout history, aniseed has been used as medicine to treat problems relating to digestion. As the taste of aniseed is somewhat strong, it is usually sweetened to make it more palatable. Today, Aniseed Rings are one of the most popular Australian lollies. They are ring-shaped gelatinous lollies made from the extract of the aniseed flower and covered in sugar.

Fantales

Known as the most iconic of all Australian lollies, the chocolate covered caramel Fantales first came out sometime in the 1930s. At the time, the ‘talkies’ just came to Australia, and a lot of people were obsessed with movie stars. Fantales featured “fan tales” or trivia about movie stars, which made them popular.

Picnic

Being lumpy does not make this sweet treat any less scrumptious. It is the perfect combination of puffed rice, nougat, cookie, caramel, peanuts, and chocolate. It has become a popular favourite in many other countries as well.

Witchetty Grubs

These white and yellow Australian lollies are jelly based, shaped like a grub with a smiling face. They are named after the actual witchetty grubs.

Caramello Koala

Among the various Australian lollies, the Caramello Koala is considered among the most popular ones. The caramel filled koala shaped chocolate lolly was earlier known as the Caramello Bear until the early 1980s. The trademark for the Caramello Koala was registered in 1982.

Jaffas

Originally made by James Stedman-Henderson’s Sweets and under the brand Sweet acres, these orange-flavoured shell lollies hide a chocolate centre. They were named after a town in Palestine, called Jaffa, which was renowned for its oranges.

Eucalyptus Drops

These quintessential Australian lollies can also double as lozenges, as they are made from menthol and eucalyptus and provide soothing relief when one has a sore throat.

Many more delicious treats are very much unique to Australia and also loved across the world.
