Long I labored in the lie
That earnestness could satisfy
The holy judge of all the earth
So I worked to prove my worth

I longed to see the smile of God
I strove to hear heaven’s applause
And with my tears I tried to pay
The debt of sin which blocked my way

But soon my strength abandoned me
My grief could not set me free
I felt a crushing, frightful fear
My hope dried up, God was not near

Desperate, I cried to God He must save for I could not Then the smile I longed to know…
