SACSCOC accrediting agency accepts LSSC QEP report

LEESBURG, Fla. (January 23, 2017) — The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges has accepted Lake-Sumter State College’s fifth-year progress report.

As part of the ongoing accreditation process, LSSC was required to submit a report on the implementation of its Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). A QEP is a required component of accreditation that identifies key issues at the institution and develops initiatives and learning outcomes to address or improve in these areas.

“Continued accreditation is evidence of Lake-Sumter State College’s focus on providing a high-quality educational experience to our students,” says Dr. Douglas A. Wymer, vice president of academic affairs. “The time and effort we invest in maintaining accreditation benefits students in many ways such as federal financial aid eligibility and easy transferability of credits to four year programs.”

In 2011, the College began implementation of Strategies of Success for Students in Developmental Classes. This plan supported students in developmental classes by introducing them to the culture of college-level work and teaching them skills to be successful.

After five years, 100 percent of the students taking SLS 1501 were educated based on outcomes of the QEP including note-taking and test-taking skills, effective use of feedback, and assistance setting attainable educational and personal goals.

“This faculty project went far beyond accreditation to develop a pulse of its own,” says Dr. Alexander Perez-Barry, former QEP program manager and English department chair. “The work was truly transformational to the College.”

LSSC’s current accreditation for associates and baccalaureate degrees expires in 2021.
