More humanized design

There are new areas in design, which are accompanied by technological advances and user behavior. Interface design and experience design.

When we talk about interface design and interaction design, often is not clear what comprises each of these disciplines. In first place, interaction design embraces man against objects and stimuli around, whether signals, machine or other objects. The interaction occurs when there is a request and a response between two sides, and depending on the design, this interaction is or not successfull.

With the rise of the use of mobile devices, interface design and interaction is a trend that is becoming more essential and necessary, having so much information available to know the needs of interaction between users and devices. Interaction design, very well associated with ergonomics (cognitive ergonomics), ranging from opening the door of a car, turn on the stove in a kitchen, or use a calculator.

“Cognitive Ergonomics is the study of all human activities (capabilities and limitations) related to knowledge and information processing that influence or are influenced by the design of machines and objects that people use, related to work processes and environments they interact “

Some ergonomic issues related to the design of interfaces include visual perception, the use of color, the focus of attention, reading, sounds, signals, proxy indicators (pictograms, icons), etc.

Interaction design is nothing new, it was always present, since the objects interact with people. Accompanied this, interface design in previous years was limited to desktop computers without too many technical and design requirements, today encompasses many types of devices, different sizes and resolutions. (Responsive design).

Focusing on the visuals, as a graphic designer, I’m interested in graphic identity of a product or a system, but also how humans interact with them. Whether a web on a desktop or a mobile app. The area of interaction design requires attention to several things, for example, to anticipate how users will react against different tasks, to see how to handle devices, foresee the unforeseen in a system, providing support and solutions to the user. While a system has programmed a sequence of actions, the use by each different user generates different answers, which must be able to be resolved by the system, with the tools available and in the short time possible. Each project involves analysis of user interface and previous research, because each project has specific requirements. From where the buttons are placed on a board, the sequence of actions, possible solutions to those errors and mistakes. User behavior is influenced by their emotions, their physical characteristics, their personality, their skills, their social and cultural context, among others.

This is a very interesting design area, because is not only about visual, but to combine the graphic elements either highlight buttons, size and type of typography, iconography, and others, with interactions and sequence of actions and behaviors . The successful combination of graphics and behavioral factors, will will increase user happiness.

This is a discipline that does maintain standards in time but changes with the new trends in technology and behaviors. Technological advances are generating new ways of doing things and interfaces must walk by the hand of these changes. Professionals in this area must be constantly updated in what users needs today.
