Time Stall by Oculus Studios

This story is part of a series where I tear down the onboarding and overall user experience of Virtual Reality games and experiences. I do this primarily for fun, but also because I want designers and developers to build truly immersive experiences, and I hope these breakdowns help.

I use my fundamental design questions / rubric to break down these experiences, and then give a rating on their overall Immersion. I play everything on my Oculus Quest.

If you’ve experienced Virtual Reality, then you know that VR is a very different domain than any other medium that we’ve created before. Because of that, the design principles for designing websites, console games, mobile applications, or anything else we’ve created before just doesn’t cut it.

If you’re going to be designing a Virtual Reality experience, you can’t default to your previous ideas of application design. You need to create new ways in which users can interact with your world.

You’re NOT designing another piece of software or application. You’re creating a new experience. …

“The Internet is to Information as VR is to Experience” — Me (or whoever said it first)

Yes. The next computing platform is Virtual Reality. That was said by Mark Zuckerberg, but the everyday person doesn’t resonate with computing platforms.

“VR is going to be the next Human Platform” — Me again (or someone else if they said it first)

After getting feedback from my good friend (recurring in most of my posts) Leon Coe, he made a good point in that VR doesn’t “compute”, but is more of a “medium”, and I’d have to argue that it sits basically…

A game of skill, luck, and strategic arbitrage created for shits and giggles

Annihilation is a card, dice, poker chips game created by Leon Coe, Kendall Ludlow, and myself. Best for 3 players, can played with 2. 4 players plays like teams.

Backstory

While at H-E-B (a grocery store here in good ‘ol Tejas), Kendall and I were just going to get some ice cream. While perusing the isles, I saw the board game section and suggested we go get a new board game. After looking at all the options, none of them seemed all that appealing, so I said, “Why…

And a little on how to get there faster

As Steve Blank likes to say, “Get out of the building.”, I like to say, “Sell your shit.” Or as Reid Hoffman likes to say, “You’ve launched too late.”, I like to say, “You’ve sold too late.”

The hard thing to do is sell your shit. Sell it early. Sell it always. Sell. Sell. Sell. Because in the very beginning, anything other than selling is leaving your business in the “default dead” category.

While there are plenty of aphorisms on building product like, “Love your customers”, “Make sure the user experience…

The abbreviated version of why Ryze died

The summer of last year is when I had to finally accept that my startup that I had worked on for the past 2 years was finally dead. $0.00 in revenue after 2 years, no significant user base, and no foreseeable monetization strategy, and shockingly, I struggled to let go of our crappy startup.

The power of delusion

If there is 1 thing I’m good at, it’s delusions of grandeur. …
