After the monkey tour yesterday that was notable for its complete lack of monkeys, Josh and I showed the blind faith of true tourists this morning by booking ourselves onto a whale watching tour.

Strictly speaking, it was my turn to stay home with Lucy (now recovering, thankfully) but you all know what happens when Roger goes on boats.

So after an alarm call that was way too early for Josh, we boarded a catamaran out of Quepos marina with our Costa Rican guide, Tomas, several Germans and not a huge amount of hope.

Within minutes, things were looking up. The glorious sight of a hump-backed whale and her baby swimming just a few hundred metres out was quickly followed by a leaping shoal of black-fin tuna.

And then there were the sea turtles.

Oh, those poor sea turtles, rolling happily in the deep until that moment and now prime fodder for the day-tripping paparazzi.

“They are…courting,” Tomas explained.

“Now they will try to find somewhere more private.”

None of us would judge them for that, although it did cut short the opportunity for better pics.

We moved on to an amazing hour of snorkelling, swimming and eating our (very impressive) lunch on the boat before heading back to Manuel Antonio.

Best news of the day was that L had been for a swim and declared that she was hungry.

So normality beckons, in more ways than one. A final adventure begins tomorrow when we head for Bahia Drake via Sierpe.

Lucy will update you all.

Blitz’n mama.
