I read about this, I think in “Lo, The Former Egyptian!” by H. Allen Smith, who was from McLeansboro, IL and had also lived in Huntington, IN. The scam he related was about a sure-fire way to get rid of potato bugs — by putting one on a shingle then smacking it dead with a second shingle. I’m guessing (I don’t have the book right in front of me) this happened around the turn of the 19th into the 20th century. And crap like that’s been going on since humans figured out they could put one over on other humans.
