Great cautionary tale, thanks! Trains can be the best and the worst way to go. My advice is avoid long trips without your own private sleeper, unless you are thirsty for experiences of distaste, discomfort and deprivation. This even applies to first class scenics as the Rocky Mountaineer, where you can’t retreat to a cabin but must ride out long days of the desperate jollity of the crew amidst the scented coiffured strangers.
