I love to see this phrase put in such a context, talking about traditions and European identity together. These differences are the evidence of human creativity and the ability of all of us to come up with incredibly different solutions to the challenges put in front of us. I hear many times that, to defend these differences, we should isolate. How can you appreciate any difference if you build a wall to separate you from the different? The idea of being more united is not in contrast with our differencies, the EU purpose is not to flatten our traditions or to make us forget our peculiarities. We should all be EU patriots to enjoy the best of each other.
