Where are the Deer?

How far ahead do you want to plan?

I would argue that not very far ahead. The only thing that will stay the same is change. Especially now, technology is going to change quickly. Prices will drop here and soar over there. New jobs will show up, or they might just all be taken away by computers. You will change. Even if you’re right and you do end up never wanting to have kids, you will grow older. You’ll learn new things and get bored of old ones. Unless you work very hard on finding the safest, easiest, lamest possible way to live — and even then — you won’t be able to predict what happens.

I think instead you should focus on two things: getting ready and getting moving. Definitely make plans. It’s good to understand what you’re aiming for. The important thing ultimately though is not that you follow the plan — the plan might not work. The ultimate end is that you achieve whatever you set out to achieve. To do that, you need to move. You need to move, and you need to be ready to pounce when opportunity arises.

Think of it like hunting — I’m thinking deer for food, but you can think Pokémon as well. If you stay in your cave/room the entire time, you will find nothing. Getting up and walking around though is not going to be enough. You need to have your spear/phone ready to get them when they show up. You need to have trained before to be sure that, when the time comes, you won’t waste time thinking but will execute.

Can hunters plan where they will find the deer exactly? Can you plan every step of the way? It’s impossible because there’s too many unknowns. You want to get more powerful and you want to get more shots. You want to have more opportunities come your way and be capable of taking them.

So sure, go ahead and make your plans. But don’t let them distract you from your goal.
