Hello Kate, I’m a male creative director in Mexico. I’ve been in the business for over 17 years. My first creative director was a woman. She was a real bitch (in the good way), she was a tough boss who really gave me a hard time, for which I am nothing but grateful, she really pushed me forward and I learned so much from her. I remember how one of our clients, a bunch of Corean men, used to do exactly what you mentioned to her (not the sexual part but ignoring her as she spoke, forcing her to almost shout to be heard). I also remember a couple of times in recent years a client tried similar things on my best friend (she’s an account executive) and I had to step up for her (which I know is also not right). She shouldn’t need a man to repeat what she said in a louder voice for the rest to take her ideas seriously: “hey guys, what you need is what she just said, come on!”. It’s really not like she needed my help, she’s a strong, smart woman whom I admire, she was just annoyed and gave up trying that particular time and I noticed.

You’ll be glad to know though, that like myself, many male professionals are doing what they can to be feminists, which is not as easy as you’d think. Trying to spot harmful behaviors in common social interactions, can be tricky. Anyway, keep your texts coming and maybe some of us will keep learning.

Thanks.
