A few people have pointed out that this a common insult, frequently exchanged between adversaries in football matches. While one could indeed argue that this insult’s frequent and common use proves that, in this instance, it was not triggered by misogyny, we must understand the origins of this insult, and how it is used differently for different people. When the target is a man, it implies that he is gay, and therefore not worthy of respect; when the target is a woman, the implication is that she is a whore, and therefore not worthy of respect. It is an insult whose very origin is both homophobic and misogynistic, and this is why I have chosen to read it as part of the ongoing wave of misogynistic attacks on President Rousseff.
