let’s not make excuses.
to all my friends now,
let’s not make excuses.
let’s realize that now matters more than we’ll ever give it credit.
let’s step back then step forward in love for each other,
and let’s connect while we can.
to all my friends i know now and won’t know forever,
i know it won’t feel like it until it’s here and we inevitably feel a little lost —
but one day we won’t see each other every day.
one day we won’t smile and hug and laugh together at life’s convenience.
one day we’ll be in different
jobs
cities
states
and this seeing each other thing, it won’t be so easy.
serendipitous coffee meet-ups,
spontaneous study sessions,
they will be over. done.
and i hate that for you and for me and for us.
it seems like it will never be here,
but i promise you one day it will.
so here’s what I ask:
let’s not make excuses.
let’s throw away our rain checks,
forget how to say ‘maybe next time,’
let’s never let ourselves believe we’re too tired to see each other.
because one day i won’t see you when i want to.
one day we’ll be living our lives.
i’ll be happy for you and you’ll be happy for me but this friendship thing, it won’t be as easy — and it certainly won’t be as convenient.
so forget about the maybes,
and remember what’s good.
concerts and coffee talks and sunsets,
new experiences and conversations that matter.
soon these things will be few and far between,
but for now they don’t have to be.
let’s not make excuses anymore.
