Are developers getting lazy?

So, I’m 21. I still consider myself new to the whole software development shindig, but I consider myself someone who knows the odd line of code or two.

I spend a lot of time browsing code, trying new things, mainly in PHP (please, no hate) but sometimes other languages too. One thing I’ve noticed, is that the importance of code optimisation (I’m British, it’s spelled correctly) seems to have fallen away.

These days it seems more likely you’ll just get a bigger AWS instance, or throw more cores at the problem than actually take a look at your code and think “actually, that could be done better”.

Look, I get it, computing is cheap now. Really cheap. But that doesn’t excuse laziness. But realistically, isn’t it better to write an application that uses at little processing power or RAM as possible?

Just a random thought, please let me know your opinion in the comments. I’m new to this whole writing thing, so any tips you have would be appreciated. I’m going to try writing more, so I’d love to learn as much as I can!
