PlayStation’s massive bet on Asia

Since 2015, Sony Interactive Entertainment has been trying their absolute hardest to capture markets where others almost never pay attention to. China, a market that had a 14 year ban on foreign video game platforms, lifted their ban in 2015. Since then, Chinese, Indian, and Malaysian studios from the Japanese giant have all propped up.

The China Hero Project

Since the formation of Shanghai Studio in China back in 2016, Sony have been working their hardest to achieve the goal of bringing more games to PlayStation that can be played in China due to heavy restrictions. Enter the China Hero Project, a wonderful initiative that incentivizes Chinese teams to bring their games to PlayStation in exchange for funds, developmental support, and even having their titles being published by PlayStation Studios. This program also allows games to be multiplatform too, so not only does Sony win by enabling a larger slew of games for not just China and even worldwide, but there’s also the ability to increase the chance developers will port or flat out create PlayStation games due to the fact that more games usually means more consoles being sold and vice versa.
