The Future of PlayStation

When Sony Interactive Entertainment first announced the PlayStation 5, the world of gaming speculated what the future could hold. Here we are now in 2023, almost 3 years after the launch of Sony’s 9th generation platform and there are many remaining questions yet to be answered. Together, we’re going to look at the Future of PlayStation.

The First Party Situation

After acquiring several developers since 2019 including Insomniac Games, Nixxes, and Bluepoint Games, we’ve not seen many games this generation from the internal teams. We’re still waiting on what the future holds, unfortunately, there are some worrying signs.

The closure of PixelOpus, the beautifully creative studio established by a bunch of college graduates in 2015 released Entwined then my 2019 Game of the Year title Concrete Genie, has seen the end of the line. Further, Japan Studio, the absolute juggernaut of a studio behind hits like Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Siren, and Gravity Rush plus external projects like BloodBorne and Demon’s Souls has sunsetted.
