This is the crux of this ongoing discussion. Very well put and researched. Also, legacy heroes of a different color in the Big 2, like say Mr. Terrific as written by James Robinson and Geoff Johns at least, can indeed transcend the originals. But as you say, in the hands of a different writer they, are eventually dumbed down or weakened, creating a bigger and most likely deliberate problem. Never ends unless you create your own.
