Meet the Bad Chicks Running the Nail Game: Claws Recap #DigIn #ClawsTNT

On Sunday, the highly anticipated show Claws premiered on TNT! For those of you who are unfamiliar, Claws is a show about a group of women led by Desna (played by Niecy Nash), running a nail salon and running a few other shady things on the side. Don’t get it twisted, these are not your run of the mill nail techs. These sisters are bad as hell but also are deep into a money cleaning scheme as well. Lets meet the cast!

Desna, played by Niecy Nash (Also: SNATCHED!)

First there’s the HBIC (head bitch in charge) DESNA! Played by the incredibly talented and hilarious Niecy Nash. Desna runs more than a little bit. She is the shop owner and the chief connect in the money cleaning scheme. Episode One gave us a glimpse into Desna’s complex life of balancing her legit business with her not so legal side hustle, all while taking care of what appears to be a special needs adult sibling. Desna has big dreams though and planned to use her rendezvous in criminality as a stepping stone to a more luxurious shop. But y’all know you can’t trust a scammer and so things get hella complex when Desna is shorted by Uncle Daddy and Roller. Our girl may be in over her head. The rent is too damn high and Roller paid for it in the end. Speaking of.

Roller, played by Jack Kesy

Meet Shady, no slim, ass Roller. This great value brand Vanilla Ice, Eminem knock off is the two timing, d*ck slinging, erotic asphyxiation asshole who periodically makes the sex with Desna and is apparently her connect into the money cleaning business. Why all the hate toward, Lil M&M? I’m glad you asked! In episode one Roller is out here making midday appointments to deliver the peen to Desna in her shop while simultaneously making promises that he CANNOT deliver on. One such promise is that our girl Desna is going to get 20Gs for cleaning this money for him and Uncle Daddy (we will get to that fool later). Roller is well aware that Desna wants out of the criminal life and plans to do so by taking her cut and purchasing a fancier salon. What happens to dreams deferred? These ninjas ain’t loyal and sure enough Roller gets to smelling himself, out here calling Desna all kinds of bitches and telling her to just be grateful for her 3 grand cut she did receive (Yes, 3 grand. You read that right). Not so sadly for Roller though he had to learn the hard way that hell hath no fury, like a black woman you done cheated out of her money and called a bitch. This brings us to: Virginia!

Virginia, played by Karrueche Tran

Virginia aka Little Miss China Doll aka But Auntie I love him. Lol. Chile. Virginia appears to be a newbie to the shop which is apparent by all the shade that gets thrown her way by everybody else. Don’t let that cute little baby face fool you because before we could even blink twice miss thang was throwing it back on Roller. Now I done already told y’all Roller was out here dropping off the D midday to Desna so y’all know this some mess.

Look at this MESS!

Anyway miss wanna be grown, decides to give up all the goods to Roller and with all the attitude. Then she has the unmitigated gall to march her black ass into Desna’s shop with a chip on her shoulder about sleeping with Roller. Look. At. All. This. Mess. Anyway. Desna ain’t having that and miss I don’t have good sense is dragged out the damn shop by her weave but not before being berated with a barrage of funny ass insults about her former career as a “dancer.” El oh el. At the end of the episode we find miss I wanna be down getting her ass beat during sex by Roller and she redeems herself by helping Desna send him night night. While she was only filling in initially for Polly, ole girl might’ve actually earned her a spot on the team. We can’t call it yet. Moving on to: POLLY!

Polly, played by Carrie Preston

Polly is my front runner fave, other than Desna of course. This Ann Taylor Loft looking woman appears to be a quiet mouse with a sweet little secret. We learned that Virginia was filling in (pun intended lol) for Polly while she was “on vacation.” A quick look at Polly’s high tech ankle jewelry lets us know that little Polly Pocket was in the clink clink. Later on in the episode while in the middle of a grocery store we learn that sweet sweet Polly was apparently ripping off old folks and now has to pay restitution; in addition to the time she has already served. We can deduce that the scheme Polly was involved in likely had something to do with Roller and Uncle Daddy. Polly is a very unsuspecting member of this cuticle landscaping, money laundering team. I mean our girl dresses like she shops at White House Black Market and her demure demeanor doesn’t exactly scream I do nails and launder money, but hey I ain’t judging. I think Ms. Polly might have a few more secrets and I cannot wait to find out what they are. Girl had me rolling tryna insult Virginia, bless her whole heart. On to the architect of the criminal cons: Uncle Daddy!

Uncle Daddy, played by Dean Norris

First of all insert eye roll here because you have a grown ass man with folks out here calling him Uncle Daddy. Chile I was annoyed every time somebody said his damn name. True to his name, he seems like a damn clown. We didn’t learn a whole lot about his background, but what we do know is that he a stingy ass demanding ass boss. While he is not above asking Desna and Roller to do his dirty work, he sure has a problem paying the girls for what their worth. Upon learning that Polly is sporting some cute ankle wear, he’s also requested that she be cut loose. Again, I think we will come to learn that he probably had something to do with her being locked up and now he wants to let her go…. BOY BYE! Any way, he gone be pissed when he find out that his little nephew Steam Roller, done got steam rolled into the ocean. Welp. The game is the game.

Alright rounding out the group of feminine ferociousness in the salon we have Quiet Ann and Jennifer!

Quiet Ann (far left), played by Judy Reyes and Jennifer, played by Jenn Lyon (far right)

First of all, I don’t think I have ever seen Judy Reyes play such a ruggedly handsome ass character as Quiet Ann. We learned very little about Ann, but what we do know is that as her name suggests she don’t speak much and she is not above putting her tongue in desperate places of housewives whose husbands are none the wiser; in the back of a car. Quiet Ann, the GOAT. She also appears to be some type of enforcer for our girl Desna. We catch her toting a baseball bat in between rubbing down client’s feet and looking up their skirts. Ann ain’t low. All in all, she seems to be the sweetheart of the crew who ain’t above getting her hands dirty.

We also know Ann loves to dance and will throw on some music quick and have you in your feel good place. Simply put, Quiet Ann has the juice. She’s the count on me through thick and thin friend and I am all the way here for Ms. Ann.

Next is Jennifer and I ain’t gone lie girlfriend confuses me. Jennifer dons the attire of somebody who wants to be down so bad and is desperately trying to escape a lifetime of being raised in suburbia. I am also more confused than a little bit because I could swear that Jennifer’s oldest child is black or biracial at best, but Jennifer’s boo is white as cocaine. What’s going on there? I am confused. Anyway besides those obvious quandaries, Jennifer appears to be Desna’s right hand woman when it comes to staying in the know about all things criminal with Uncle Daddy and Low Roller. Also, when little Polly Pocket had her breakdown in the grocery store, it was Jennifer who got all the spilled tea. Let’s keep an eye on Jenny not from the Block and see how she fits into this happy family.

Overall, the show had a very action packed first episode. One of the main characters is already dead and an unlikely duo has formed. We know its going to get even messier and I cannot wait to see how these nail manicuring divas handle it all. I’m not rushing to trust Virginia just yet because she is overly ambitious and impulsive, but one thing is for sure and that’s we gotta keep her close! How did y’all enjoy the episode? Let me know, and see y’all next week!
