Snow surprises us,
dusts the dried brown sedum stalks,
Earth moves towards solstice.

Gray sky, bare branches
Christmas lights punctuate dusk
Darkness pushes in.

Not bleak — on the way,
Rabbits,voles gone to warm nests.
Intrepid birds come.
