Escaping Alcatraz

The Anglin Brothers: An Unsolved Escape from Alcatraz

**Decades-Old Mystery**

For over 50 years, the vanishing of Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers, Clarence and John, has posed a perplexing riddle. After daringly breaking out of Alcatraz in 1962—a fortress-like institution reserved for the most hardened criminals—their fate has remained one of America’s most bewildering unsolved cases.

The widely held assumption has been that the trio didn’t make it through the treacherous San Francisco Bay waters following their flight from the imposing island jail.

However, a twist emerged in 2013 when a handwritten note sent to the San Francisco Police, and later obtained by a CBS affiliate KPIX, featured a claim by an individual asserting to be John Anglin. At 83, he declared through this letter that he and his cohorts indeed survived the notorious breakout but just barely, while disclosing his ailing condition due to cancer. The letter also noted the demise of both Morris in 2008 and Clarence Anglin in 2011. The writer offered to divulge his whereabouts in exchange for a limited one-year jail sentence and medical care.
