A quote by Marilyn vos Savant “To acquire knowledge, one must study, but to acquire wisdom, one must observe.” It reflects a fundamental truth about how humans learn, yet many don’t understand the difference between knowledge and wisdom. Let’s examine what separates these two concepts and why understanding their distinctions is essential.

Knowledge vs Wisdom
The dictionary defines knowledge as “familiarity, awareness, or understanding gained through experience or study,” while wisdom is defined as “the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment.” Knowledge is simply facts that you have learned either through studying or experiencing. Wisdom comes when you apply those facts in real-life situations to make decisions and judgments. In other words, you can get knowledge from books; wisdom comes from life itself.

Knowledge Can Be Learned
We constantly learn new things throughout our lives, whether in school or on the job. Through studying books and completing courses, we build up a bank of knowledge that we can draw upon to help us understand the world around us. This knowledge can be helpful in certain situations, but it often needs to provide more information to make wise decisions or judgments.

Wisdom Comes From Experience
Wisdom cannot be taught; it must be earned through experience. We develop our unique worldview by observing the world around us and making mistakes. It’s only by making mistakes that we learn from our experiences and begins to form our well-rounded viewpoint on life. In this way, wisdom gives us a deeper understanding than mere book learning ever could.

Knowledge can open doors for us — but we need the wisdom to know which door to go through! That’s why it’s so important to gain knowledge and wisdom to become successful in life — they work together like a team! While it may seem like an uphill battle, acquiring both is possible with determination and patience — keep learning and observing! With the right combination of education and experience, you’ll be sure to reach success no matter what path you choose!
