Why Video Games Aren’t Fun Anymore

If you’re anything like me, you probably grew up playing video games, and have religiously played them for most of your life. However, in recent years, I’ve found myself playing significantly less games then I used to, you could say it’s because I’m not a kid anymore and not so easily entertained, but I think there’s a bit more to it than that.. So let’s dive in and figure out why video games just aren’t as fun as they used to be.

Price
When it comes to purchasing video games, the price is the part that’s hardest to digest. I mean really, 70–90 dollars for a game that might not even have any replayability? When we were kids and fell in love with gaming, our parent’s probably bought all the games and accessories, so we didn’t really realize how expensive of a hobby it really is, but as an adult, I feel gross, and oftentimes ripped off, when I pay full price for a game. So paying that much money for a game that you might not even enjoy to its full potential can be very discouraging and a big investment.

Variety in games
When I was a kid, it seemed like every game I played was drastically different than the last, there was so much innovation and creativity, however, in recent years, it seems like much of that innovation and creativity is gone, and now they just release the same games year after year with very minor changes and improvements.

Nostalgia
Maybe the reason games aren’t fun anymore is because nostalgia makes it seem like games used to be more fun than they actually are? Well, I think not, I recently went back and played a few games from my childhood, (Final Fantasy 7, Twilight Princess, Halo 2) and they were all just as fun and great as I remember, it seems that storytelling and the overall structure of games was better back then, they weren’t always holding your hand, you had to figure out where to go and what to do on your own. Not to mention the absence of microtransactions and DLC, the complete game was at your fingertips. These games are also all very replayable, because they were designed in such a way that the game is irreplaceable, unlike todays standards where they design games for the sole purpose of being disposable, so that consumers will fork out another hefty sum of money every year or two.

Conclusion
I think the reasons for me and many others; that video games aren’t as fun as they used to be, comes down to feeling ripped off time after time when you purchase a game that you really didn’t end up enjoying, and buying games that feel rather incomplete, many games that release today are NOT complete and have a plan in place to squeeze as much money out of it’s customers as possible for years to come. Also the fact that we are not kids anymore, and not everything new is fun. A lot of the time it can be stressful and just too time consuming. Life is busy and we need to reward ourselves with things we actually enjoy. Not things that stress us out further.
