Great write up, Matthew Dunn! I was also getting into the field and working on the fast.ai course. Really great course. I had a really great moment I want to share. Andrej Karpathy has a great blog post about his approach to machine learning project which is quite well accepted. I read it once long before I started fast.ai course, can’t really get what he was talking about. I recently went through it again and guess what, I can mostly know and agree to what he wrote in the blog post! And I have not finished the fast.ai deep learning course yet.

One great thing about the top-down approach is that you have the big picture in mind and can (most of the time) evaluate whether one topic or concept is worth delve down deeper. It saves enormous time compares to the ‘bottom-up’ approach where you could learn for a very long time, still felt like you can’t achieve much or know your way around.
