They may have needed a shake-up’ I’m inclined to agree much about the government does and has for a long time. But what has been done to the State Department is butchery — and I don’t think it’s even clumsy so much as deliberate, as evidenced by the simultaneous beefing up of planned military expenditure. (Yes, I know certain parts of that budget need extensive re-fitting and supplying, and the president is bloviating about it. We’ll see what pans out for the actual combat personnel.) It seems obvious that both diplomacy itself and transparency in what negotiating activity does survive are on the block.
