I wonder if this sort of response is more common in start ups run by know-it-all man-babies than in larger companies or companies run by people over the age of 35.

This is quite different from the tennis ball question — some big companies have used those types of questions knowing there isn’t really a good answer but to see how a candidate handles an absurd question.
