You can’t blame people for defending their homeland from invaders (and not fighting for Hitler), or individuals having no other choice but to fight, including the lowly German or Japanese foot soldier — it was hard for anyone in those situations to conceive of doing otherwise.

Whether they should be immortalized with a statue is really up to the locality that wants to fund it (or funded the original statue). The removal of Confederate flags started before these other events, and arguably, we appear to be headed in the direction of what you suggest. If new political invaders try to force it, it is just asking for a counter response.
