Mindset Change of Growth

….. Growth ain’t only about the physical appearance,

It’s also reflected with the change of ones’ mindset. It is said nothing beats a cultivating talent, as long as theirs an aspiration of growth.

My most recent challenging learning experience was focused momentarily on restructure. Let me explain, I got to work on those busy norm Thursday, where the workload depends on how free or crumpled up your Friday will be. Then we got an announcement on the MD was giving an announcement. “Due to financial constraints we shall restructure the organisation, this means, some of us will be leaving.” Silence loomed the organisation.

Forward to Friday, with everyone being on edge, others already applying for other jobs, it was such a chaos, I on the other hand decided to be calm. With a calming voice at the back of my head encouraging me through a soft whisper “may the odds be in my favor”. One by one the departments got their individual letters, the doom letters you get before retirement starting with the headline, “Retrenchment”. Could only help but stare at the white papers being handed out, while cringing not to hear mine.

I was called in last, well this ain’t an advantage because the rest of your workmates know their fate, some cried, some created attention, some accepted their fate, while others just left. It’s the inconsolable state, since it sinks in really slowly. Walking into the vast boardroom I sat across my supervisor who had mentored me for two years, the weird part was that there were no contract papers being ushered to me. “You are the youngest, and as far as retrenchment goes, you have a whole field to explore in relation to IT, you lose some you win some, that said, we decided to keep you on-board.” The rest of the words just faded.

There’s so much good in the worst of us and so much bad in the best of us that sometimes it’s hard to decide which should refrain from the other. This was a completely humbling moment for me, and at the same time it deemed that I put in more effort with the team left to gear up back the company to its glory days. Instead of waking up with fright this change of mindset enabled me to view each day differently than the prior, and appreciate the little things.
