Lyn’s Web3 Adventure: Part 1

So today I got introduced to some talks about Web 3.0. My impostor syndrome is growing larger than ever, being a computer science student- but I am writing this blog to learn as I go, and document my progress of expanding and sharing my knowledge with my non-existent readers! (maybe sell as an NFT. Do NFTs work that way? Guess we’ll only find out.)

Web 3.0 …what is it?

According to Google, Web 3.0 is the third version of the Internet. A little ashamed to be a computer science student but I didn’t even know there were different versions of the web. Was I even born when Web 1.0 existed?

Anyway, for those who are like me, here is a brief overview.

Web 1.0 — Read ✅

Picture it as websites, portals or online services made out of frames and tables on HTML in static, read-only form.

Web 2.0 — Read ✅ Write ✅

Blogs, forums and podcasts- enabling users to write stuff too. But things are still under data collection rights by large companies. More information about this below.

Web 3.0 — Read ✅ Write✅ Own✅

Users and content creators can own pieces of internet services by owning tokens, both non-fungible (NFTs) and fungible. Will cover this in another post soon!

Web 3.0, the decentralized web

decentralized definition: to distribute the administrative powers

Data and information online unfortunately belong to large companies like Amazon, Apple, Meta & Google during Web 2.0 because of the Terms and Conditions that we are forced to accept each time we use their services. Sounds like we’re trying to tackle the problem of companies hosting content made by users and then monetizing it privately in Web 3.0. Doesn’t that just sound great?

Also, what psychopath reads Terms and Conditions anyway?

Thanks for reading, hope you found it useful. My next post will be about blockchain, so stay tuned for that!
