This semester, I have learned a lot about writing that will be prevalent in my future careers. Different writing skills we have gone over in our class discussions were Inverted Pyramid, variations on leads, and AP style. One particular skill that I believe I did well was conducting a lead. On our first writing assignment where we wrote leads, I scored a 97/100 and was really proud of that.
The writing skills I had difficulties with were making sure everything in my assignments matched the AP style. On this particular assignment, I had some trouble with my attributions. From my writing assignment scores and feedback, I know I have to continue to reread my writing and double check it before submission.
Journalism 61 is my first proper writing class for media, so everything was very new to me. For example, I was not familiar with AP style and I depended on the AP stylebook. As for writing leads and the inverted pyramid style, I did not know of those but it was simple to pick up and edit my writing to fit those standards.
As I continue my career in media, I know these writing styles will continue to be relevant. Therefore, I want to practice memorizing AP style since I still have to refer to the stylebook. As for the style I enjoyed most, my favorite was the interview aspect even though this is also what I found a more difficult to learn. I found the interview assignment more difficult since we also had to create a press release.
Learning AP style was somewhat difficult only because of all the rules that was needed to be applied. I referred to the AP style stylebook many times and used notes from class discussions to get by.
Overall, self-reflection can be beneficial to my writing because it allows me to go over what I did right and what needs to be worked on. By doing this, I am further developing my writing skills because I am evaluating my past and present work.
