This totally sucks.

Sure if grace hopper was “discouraging” girls from attending that would suck. But it doesn’t.

If you look at the GHC site, you’ll see the number and kind of international funding they offer to enable as many gals as possible from as many places as possible to come to GHC.

YOu might see that annually MANY women from industry speak at grace hopper, too. Those registrations from people who can afford to contribute that go into making sure there are bursaries for all those girls/women who can’t.

Some guys, go, too. Like the VP of research for microsoft — in his famous interview with Maria Klawe about women and salaries and “just ask for it” — raises -and his apology afterwards.

Agreed, it would be great if speakers - and usually these are folks that are part of panels, not keynotes - were comped full registration. Maybe we’ll get there, and maybe they could do it better - to ask for contributions equivalent to registration - rather than saying you need to register.

But this is not a commercial conference; it’s academic in routes, and has different approaches.

It’s too bad that wasn’t made clear. Or maybe it was.

But really - please check out everything wonderful GHC has been doing and the impact it’s been having before focusing on what may be - actually - a blip that’s being addressed
