CS371p Fall 2019: Max Patrick
Week 10

What did you do this past week?
This past week I started thinking about the Darwin project, unfortunately, I haven’t been able to start working on it due to having so many other projects requiring my attention. In my Mobile Computing Class, we currently have our hardest project to work on which is pretty intimidating considering all of the other work I have. Luckily I haven’t had any exams recently, and don’t have any to study for which really frees up my time to work on my projects. On the weekend I took a day trip down to Dallas with some boys, which was a good time.
What’s in your way?
I’m just most limited by the amount of time I have relative to what I want to do. If I had better time management then I probably wouldn’t always feel like I have to my projects last minute, currently, though the idea of finishing my projects early is so foreign I can’t even imagine it. This isn’t an original concern at all, and if you look at my previous posts a lot of them echo this same idea, which I feel is very representative of the life of a college student. I don’t know anyone who feels that they can comfortably get everything they want done in the time they have.
What will you do next week?
Next week I hope to finish the Darwin project and get all of my other projects wrapped up and turned in. In addition to all of my coding projects, I need to revise and submit a paper for one of my classes that carries a writing flag. If I have any free time hopefully I’ll be able to attend some meetings for some student organizations.
What was your experience of the vector implementation? (this question will vary, week to week)
Learning how vector is implemented is really interesting because although I’ve constantly used all of the containers in the standard library, I don’t actually know how any of them are implemented under the hood. It is interesting exploring all of the challenges faced in implementing these containers, and what can go wrong with certain naive implementations.
What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?
My tip-of-the-week is to keep your friends close! It can be very hard staying in contact with everyone who matters to you during the school year, but maintaining those meaningful relationships is important to keeping a healthy social life. In addition to keeping you sane, your friends will be there to help you when you struggle, facing things alone can be extremely challenging so having someone who has your back is always reassuring.
